Which is more suitable for intermittent cutting with super hard cutting tools and carbide tools? The early failure of cutting edge is a major problem in the continuous cutting of cemented carbide tips. Unlike continuous cutting, the cutting edge is broken before it reaches the allowable wear limit. Under the condition of intermittent cutting, the life of cemented carbide tips has dropped dramatically. The reasons are as follows:

(1) mechanical impact in the process of feed and retracting.

(2) the heat effect of cutting tool chip interface in the process of periodic heating and cooling.

(3) the combined effect of mechanical shock and thermal effects.

These factors are the main reasons for reducing tool life in intermittent cutting. In actual machining, there will be a lot of intermittent cutting conditions, such as slurry pump cover, bearing two teeth end, if we also use carbide tools, not only reduce the processing efficiency, but also increase the cost and labor force, therefore, the choice of tool materials should be paid more attention.
